Globex Summer Program 2013 on the way

  • The Globex Summer Program for 2013, initiated by the Office of International Relations, College of Engineering (COE) and involves dozens of students and faculty from many world-renown universities, will take place next month (July 1st to July 31st) at Peking University. On June 10, a briefing of the program was made to encourage more participation from the COE students.

According to Professor Pingchou Han, director of the Program, 71 students from over ten universities, most of whom are foreign, have signed up for the program. Participants include University of Pittsburgh (USA), University of Iowa (USA), University of Delaware (USA), University of Maryland (USA), Institute of Fluid Mechanics (France), University of Toronto (Canada), University of New South Wales (Australia), CONICYT (Chile), Yokohama National University (Japan) and The Chinese University of HK (Hong Kong). Seven courses covering the fields of Biomechanics, hydraulics, manufacturing engineering and solar energy etc. have been scheduled.

Three COE students Yimin Liu, Jianzhou Lu and Ren Yang, who have spent one semester at University of Delaware participating in the Globex spring program, shared their perspectives.

“The program has been an once-in-a-lifetime experience for me,” said Liu, who achieved “A” grade for all the four courses he took, “The courses I have taken have very different styles, some are literature-review-oriented, some are very hands-on engineering. It’s also a good opportunity to advance English language proficiency.”

At the briefing, Professor Dongxiao Zhang, executive vice dean of COE, also shared his study experience in US, and encouraged the COE students to participate in the program.

“As economy and culture is going global, education should also go global. The Globex program is an innovative approach for global education. The summer program at Peking University is especially good, as it enables our students to join in an international context without even going outside,” commented Zhang.
