The 1st meeting of the 3rd Industrial Board of the College of Engineering (COE), Peking University (PKU) was successfully held at PKU on December 14. Over twenty board members and many COE professors gathered together to jointly discuss COE’s development issues. Prof. Shanlu Zhu, Chair of Council of PKU, Prof. Shiyi Chen, Vice President of PKU and Dr. Ya Deng, General Secretary of PKU Education Foundation participated in the meeting. The conference was presided over by Prof. Dongxiao Zhang, Dean of COE.
Taking into account of newly-established partnerships, the meeting elected 27 members of the 3rd Industrial Board, including five new members, namely, Mr. Yueming Hu, Chairman and CEO of China High Speed Transmission Equipment Group, Mr. Zhigang Jiao, President of China Construction International Co., Ltd., Mr. Zhuozhi Li, Chairman of Detao Education Technology Co., ltd., Mr. Dongsheng Wang, Chairman of BOE Technology Group, and Mr. Junshan Zhao, Dean of Tianze Institute for Wetland Restoration Technology.
Mr. Hai Zhu, Senior Vice President & President of Schneider Electric China was elected as Chairman of the 3rd Industrial Board. “The modern society faces a big challenge in energy supply. With the rising of people’s living standards, the energy need in the future will multiply, but the emission of carbon oxidant should be reduced to half. This results in a big call in the use of new energy as well as environment safety. COE has strong advantages in solving energy problems in a systematic way. I hope the new term of Board will make substantive contributions,” said Zhu.
PKU Chairman Shanlu Zhu said he was very impressed by COE’s rapid development in recent years, and pointed out that the Industrial Board has played an important role in COE’s growth. He hoped that COE could become a pioneering college in realizing PKU’s dream of becoming a world-class university in five years, and asked for the members’ close relationship and great support.
Subsequently, Dean Dongxiao Zhang introduced the latest development of the college. Associate Dean Duoxiang Wang talked about the work of technology transfer and entrepreneurship. Assistant Dean Yongmei Li reported on resources development of the college. Four representative student projects, including the Solar Decathlon PKU team, Engineering Design Contest, Aviation Club and Capstone Design were introduced. The board members were very impressed with COE’s achievements, and expressed willingness to further their collaborations with COE.
In the afternoon’s session, parallel discussions were conducted by three Sub-Committees, namely the Sub-Committee for Aerospace, Marine, Mechanical Engineering & Manufacturing, Sub-Committee for Energy, Resources & Environment, and Sub-Committee for Information Science, Materials, Chemical Engineering & Biological Engineering. The board members had heated discussions with COE professors in many areas of common interests.

The Industrial Board of the College of Engineering of Peking University was born in 2006 to carry out COE’s grand strategy of “building a world-renowned engineering college through the world-wide wisdom and strength.” By promoting joint research, advancing technology transfer and facilitating student innovation, the board has provided strong physical and intellectual support for the sustainable growth and sound development of COE. By far, the 2nd board has successfully achieved its mission, and the 3rd board is in corporation.
In the past years, COE has harvested rich development resources with the great support from the board. In donation, COE has received match funds, student scholarships, faculty fellowships and discipline funds from many companies, such as Zhejiang Defa Group, Zhenxing Wheel Group, Detao Group, Schneider Electric, ExxonMobil Investment China, SAP, Schlumberger, Boeing and others. In industrial entrepreneurship, COE has co-built research centers and labs with China Construction International, Dayun Group, China National Petroleum, Sunrain Solar Energy, China Union Engineering, Founder Group and Rundili Group etc. In social and academic exchange, Detao Group, ExxonMobil, Dayun Group offered different kinds of courses, lectures, internships and exchange opportunities for the COE students.
