Taiwan Ten Outstanding Young Person’s Foundation visits COE

  • A delegation of 10 from Taiwan Ten Outstanding Young Person’s Foundation visited the College of Engineering (COE) on September 10. Delegates include the Foundation Vice Chairman Maoxiong Huang, Supervisor Weizhao Chen, Executive Chairman Chengjia Li, Executive Chairman and Executive Officer Guozhou Lai. They toured COE Associate Professor Qining Wang’s Laboratory of Intelligent Assistive Limbs and Associate Professor Qingdong Cai’s Laboratory of 3D Visualization of Computational Fluid Mechanics, before meeting with COE Dean Shiyi Chen.

Taiwan Ten Outstanding Young Person’s Foundation has been PKU’s important partner for Taiwan Relations over the past decade. The two parties have been organizing regular mutual visits for students, teachers and officers. These activities have been deepening the understanding and friendship between youths of the two sides, and expanding exchange and cooperation in education and academy.

In the Laboratory of Intelligent Assistive Limbs, Associate Professor Qining Wang and his students introduced their research and products of intelligent and easy-to-use assistive limbs. The lab is also developing medical robots which help elder patients recover from strokes and hemiplegia. The guests were interested in the walking mechanisms, controlling systems, and individualization issues.

In their succeeding tour to the Laboratory of 3D Visualization, Associate Professor Qingdong Cai demonstrated a new type of computational fluid mechanics tool, and showed the delegation some animated 3D movies of airflows passing by outer airplanes in cruise state.

Following the lab tours, the delegation met with Dean Shiyi Chen and Assistant Dean Yongmei Li. Chen made a full introduction to the College after expressing warm welcome to the guests. He introduced COE’s history, development strategy, globalization programs, faculty profile, research areas, and many recent achievements.

According to Chen, COE has been successfully pursuing its strategy of focusing on high-quality and high-level engineering science since its re-establishment sever years ago. It has made remarkable progress in many aspects of College development. Its six departments are now accommodating over 100 faculty members, many of whom are distinguished scholars recruited from the world. Its research funding and published papers have been in a steady increase. The hosting of many global events such as Global Engineering Deans Council Conference and Solar Decathlon Competition, and the many collaborating education and research programs with other world universities have promoted the College’s fame around the world.

Maoxing Huang, head of the delegation, expressed that they were really impressed by COE’s remarkable achievement, and wishes to have further communications in the future.
