Chair of PKU Council visits COE laboratories and meets with the College leaders

  • On December 26, headed by Professor Shanlu Zhu, chair of Peking University Council, a  delegation visited the College of Engineering’s selected laboratories, and later met with the major leaders in the Mechanics Building.

In the Microbial Ecology and Biotechnology Laboratory    In the Engineering Center for In-Vivo Diagnosis and Therapy

Accompanied by Dean Shiyi Chen, Zhu and the delegation visited the Microbial Ecology and Biotechnology Laboratory, the State Key Laboratory for Turbulence and Complex Systems and Ministry of Education Engineering Center for In-Vivo Diagnosis and Therapy. Zhu commented that these laboratories impressed himand gave him a better understanding of the laboratories’ focus areas, the economic and social value of the research as well as the main challenges.

In the Microbial Ecology and Biotechnology Laboratory located on 2nd floor of the Jiwu Building, Director Xiaolei Wu introduced their research activities on novel technologies for biological resources development and food processing by approaches of genetic engineering, cell engineering, enzyme engineering, fermentation engineering as well as chemical engineering.

In the wind tunnel near the State Key Laboratory for Turbulence and Complex Systems, Deputy Director Cunbiao Lee introduced his team’s experimental research of fluid dynamics, including boundary layer transition, hypersonic instability, turbulent boundary layer, and water/air interface.

Zhu and the delegation then arrived at the Engineering Center for In-Vivo Diagnosis and Therapy in the Mechanics building, where Director Tianyu Xie introduced the center’s advanced technologies for early diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases. The center is carrying out research activities in optical spectrum diagnostics, molecular imaging, endomicroscopy and in-vivo cell observation and more.

Dean Chen made an overall report   to Professor Shanlu Zhu, Chair of Peking University Council

At the meeting afterwards, Chen made an overall report on the College’s developments in the past several years.
Zhu pointed out that COE’s growth has been instrumental for Peking University to achieve its goal of becoming a world-class university. He hoped that COE would adopt a new mode of development to become an engineering institution with its uniqueness.

Zhu said he hoped that COE would adopt a new mode of development that combined it advantages rooted in tradition while exploring new breakthroughs. For instance, COE could strengthen its role in national service and public consultation by promoting the transformation of achievements in basic research into advanced technology for society, Zhu said.
