    COE students win the 4th Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Scholarship

  • On June 12, the 4th Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Scholarship (UPOS) awarding ceremony was held in the College of Engineering (COE), where a dozen of students received the honor.

    Dr. Philip Choong and Dr. Hsia Choong, founders and donors of UPOS, Ms. Yang Hu from Peking University Education Foundation, and many previous winners of UPOS presented at the ceremony. The event was hosted by Ms. Yongmei Li, assistant dean of COE.

    At the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Choong had a pleasant meeting with the 4th scholarship winners and listened to their reports about their internship plans.

    Many previous 2nd and 3rd UPOS winners shared their internship experiences and achievements.

    Mr. and Mrs. Choong encouraged the students to make courageous attempts in seeking internship opportunities in order to find out their career directions.

    In addition, as an expert of nuclear engineering technology, Mr. Choong gave a seminar entitled “Nuclear Power Innovation Opportunities and Ecological Civilization”. He explained the advantages of using nuclear power as well as the disadvantages and safety concerns.

    The UPOS project was launched at the College of Engineering in 2011 by Dr. Philip Choong and Dr. Hsia Choong. With a budget of 100,000 USD, it was the first scholarship at Peking University set up specifically to facilitate internships and practice activities for undergraduates.

    Till now, UPOS has benefited dozens of undergraduate students, facilitating them to seek their various summer internship positions, to explore the outside world while still at school and to have a clearer understanding of what their future career might be.
