    College of Engineering celebrates its 10th anniversary

  • On October 18th, 2015, the College of Engineering (COE) of Peking University (PKU) hosted a grand ceremony to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The ceremony took place in the Sunny Hall of Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center at PKU.

    Over 350 people, including government officials, university and college heads, company leaders, alumni, retired teachers, and current students, faculty members and staff joined the event. Many members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering also attended the celebration.

    The event started with a 10-minute film which reviewed the college’s history and re-establishment, introduced its departments, faculty and students, and highlighted its research areas, international cooperation and technology transfer.

    In the film, lots of people, including PKU president and secretary, former PKU president, COE leaders, alumni, faculty students and students, talked about COE’s development in the past decade. They also gave their best wishes to the college. In addition, Prof. Gregory Washington, Dean, Henry Samueli School of Engineering, University of California, Irvine, Prof. Iven Mareels, Dean of Engineering, University of Melbourne, Prof. Yannis Yortsos, Dean, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, Prof. Chua Kee Chaing, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, National University of Singapore, and Prof. Wong Ching Ping, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong send their words of wishes to the college by video.

    After watching the film, Prof. Jianhua Lin, president of PKU, congratulated COE for having achieved remarkable development in the past decade, and hoped it will make bigger contributions in student cultivation, academic research and technology transfer in the future.

    On the ceremony, the college was conferred “Pilot College in Internationalization” by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, to recognize COE in efforts of internationalization.

    Prof. Dongxiao Zhang, dean of COE, expressed his warmest welcome to all participants. He summarized the college’s achievement, and mentioned the direction of future work in the coming years.

    As representative of the alumni, academician Xiangwan Du hoped that COE will cultivate a large number of experts in engineering in the next decade, so as to meet the demand of the country.

    Prof. Shiyi Chen, the founding dean of COE, currently president of the South University of Science and Technology, China, wished that COE will grab the opportunity of industrial intelligence and make full use of its advantages.

    Representatives from other universities also spoke on the ceremony, as well as COE retired faculty members, current faculty members and students.

    Witnessed by all of the participants, the launching ceremony of the new building complex of COE took place. With huge support from ENN Energy Holdings, the building will start construction this year, which will have space of over 60k square meters and locate on Zhongguancun North Street, opposite to the east gate of PKU.

    In the afternoon, the participants attended symposiums which were organized by the college departments.
