    The 2014 Summit for Women Health Development held at Peking University

  • Recently, undertaken by the College of Engineering, Health Science Center of Peking University (PKU), and the PKU Research Center for China Women’s Health Engineering and Technology, the 2014 Summit for Women Health Development was held at PKU, which gathered nearly 300 experts from the health community, the academics and the industry to discuss the current status and perspective of China Women’s Health Development.

    Women’s health is an issue of great importance. Women’s health is not only important to the women themselves but also related to the health of the future generations. In 2010, initiated by China Women’s Association and PKU, the China Women’s Health Engineering & Technology Research Center was established in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, College of Engineering, with a mission to “Care for Women’s Health & Promote Women’s Development”.

    In the past several years, the center has been targeting at serious diseases that threat women's health, including breast cancer, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, women's reproductive tract infections and other serious diseases, studying pervasive technologies for early detection and minimally invasive treatment, and concentrating on engineering and clinical application of disease control technologies.

    The 2014 summit attendants included government officials, professors from PKU, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Southeast University and Capital Medical University, researchers from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Aeronautics Medical Institute of Air Force and Academy of Chinese Traditional Medicine, doctors from renowned women’s hospitals, and officers from pharmaceutical companies.

    Ms. Meiying Zhang, vice president of China Women’s Association, pointed out the reasons, necessity and urgency of healthcare reform in China in her plenary speech. Professor Yang Ke, Executive Vice President of PKU, delivered a keynote speech on medical technology advancement and personal health. Ms. Linhong Wang, deputy director of Chronic Disease Center, analyzed the variety and development trend of women chronic diseases, and gave solutions of control.

    In the following sub-forums, the participants were divided into four subject groups, including Biomedical Engineering and Women Health, Chinese Traditional Medicine, Gene Industry and Health, and Happiness for Women. The attendants held deep discussions and found the event very informative and beneficial to them.
