Globex Summer program holds welcome ceremony

  • Moderated by Assistant Dean Pingchou Han, the welcome ceremony for the Globex Summer 2013 was held in Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center at Peking University recently. Dean of the College of Engineering Dongxiao Zhang and Associate Dean Steven Feng Chen joined with the faculty and students of the program.

Dean Zhang first warmly welcomed the young people who have come from all over the world and thanked the international teachers for their efforts. “The college hopes that the program could become such a platform that gathers world-class professors and enables students from different countries to share knowledge, exchange culture, broaden international horizon, and enhance understandings between different backgrounds,” said he.

The Globex Summer Program is open to all the engineering institutions in the world and aims to promote academic and cultural exchange in the field of engineering education. Partner institutions include 11 world-renowned universities such as University of Toronto (Canada), University of Pittsburgh (USA), University of New South Wales (Australia), and Institute of Fluid Mechanics (France). Participating students come from over ten countries which include China, US, France, Singapore, Australia and Japan. Teaching professors are from well-known institutions such as the Chinese University of HK (Hong Kong), University of Maryland (USA), University of Pittsburgh (USA), and University of Toronto (Canada).

In this year’s program, seven courses were arranged, including Musculoskeletal Tissues Regeneration & Biomechanics, Biomaterials and Biocompatibility, Numerical Methods in Hydraulics and Hydrology, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanics of Solids, Photovoltaics: Solar Energy, and Computational Two-Phase Flows. During the courses, the students and faculty gained deeper feelings about the program. They talked about their gains and experiences. “Globex gave every one an incredible experience. It’s an excellent opportunity for young people to exchange ideas in engineering. A variety of thoughts collide and a diversity of cultures blind here,” Professor Shaker Meguid from University of Toronto commented.

Before the event concluded, Dean Zhang awarded the Globex Fellow Certificate to the teachers, and Associate Dean Steven Feng Chen conveyed the Globex Participation Certificate to the students.
