After a strict selection procedure, three undergraduate students Yimin Liu, Jianzhou Lu and Ren Yang have been accepted to study at the University of Delaware (UD) for the upcoming spring semester. It will be the first time that a College of Engineering (COE) student studies in a foreign university under the Globex initiative. The credits they gained will be considered for transferal back to their Program of Study at Peking University.
Launched in 2012, the Global Educational Exchange (Globex) program allows students from COE and a foreign engineering school to study at each other’s college for a defined period of time, with tuition and all miscellaneous fees mutually waived by both institutions. According to Professor Pingchou Han, assistant dean for international relations and director of the program, up to twelve universities will participate in the program. For this 2013 summer, COE is anticipating Globex students and faculty from the following institutions: Stanford University, University of Delaware, University of Maryland, University of Pittsburgh, University of Southern California, Chinese University of Hong Kong, CONICYT (Chile), University of Toronto (Canada), University of New South Wales (Australia), Yokohama National University (Japan), University of Cambridge (UK) and Institute of Fluid Mechanics Toulouse (France).
The Globex Program with UD allows COE sophomores and juniors to study at UD for either the spring or fall semester. The three students who have been selected to embark on their study at UD in January 2013 will receive financial support from the Chinese Scholarship Council.
Yimin Liu from the Department of Energy and Resources Engineering said, “I look forward to the opportunity. I think the experience at UD will give me a new point of view about the technology and policy of energy and resources. Also it will be an excellent opportunity to practice English and improve my adaptive ability.”
Ren Yang and Jianzhou Lu expressed the hope that they will take this opportunity to learn more about the U.S. culture and to further enhance their academic and research training.
Previously in the summer of 2012, students from many Globex universities including UD, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Yokohama National University, and 4 Chile Universities participated in the Globex Summer program organized by COE. The program has won favorable appraisals from student body. “We will try to put forward more courses and offer more international exchange opportunities for our students in 2013,” said Professor Han at that time.
