  • Recently, Dr. Qiushi Ren, professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, was elected as a new Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). He will be formally inducted during the AIMBE Annual Event which will be held February 17-19, 2013 in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Ren received his Ph. D degree in Electrical Engineering from the Ohio State University. From 1990 to 1994, he was an assistant professor of Department of Biomedical Engineering, University Miami. From 1995 to 1998, he was an associate professor of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of California, Irvine. He joined the College of Engineering in 2005 and served as chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering since then.

Dr. Ren mainly engaged in the study on basic theory and technical research of laser medicine. Based on the comprehensive and in-depth research on key issues of visual optics and visual function restoration, he put forward a serial of new theories or new methods. AIMBE is a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., representing 50,000 individuals as well as academic institutions, private industry, and professional engineering societies. AIMBE was founded in 1991 and its current vision is to provide leadership and advocacy in medical and biological engineering for the benefit of society.

Approximately 1,000 individuals who are the outstanding biomedical and biological engineers in academia, industry, and government constitute the College of Fellows. These leaders represent the top 2% of the medical and biological engineering community. They have distinguished themselves through their contributions in research, industrial practice and/or education.

Potential Fellows are nominated by current AIMBE Fellows. Nominees are then reviewed by a subcommittee catered to their professional expertise or accomplishments. If a nominee gains approval from a subcommittee, they are then voted upon by the entire fellowship. Candidates who receive approval from the majority of the College of Fellows are inducted during the AIMBE Annual Event. Members retain lifelong membership.
