On November 10-14, following its first workshop in Canada, the 2011 Peking University-University of Toronto Capstone Design Program held its second workshop at the PKU Campus.
Teams, made up of 2-4 PKU and Toronto students, presented their progress to professors at Peking University and the University of Toronto. The workshop also featured Schlumberger Manager Jim Belaskie’s talk on his 28-year career in the oilfield industry.

Jim Belaskie
Belaskie received his BASc in mechanical engineering from the University of Toronto in 1983 and joined Schlumberger the same year. In his talk, he summarized his career with the company, and answered questions from the students, such as what makes a resume stand out, how female engineers feel working on rigs, tips on job interviews, etc.

Student Team Presentation
On November 12, seven student teams presented their work to the experts and received comments and suggestions. The projects included “Easternizing Western GUIs,” “Fluid Antenna and Wireless Strain Sensor,” “Smart Relocation Detector for Forced Shutdown,” “Auditory Mapping Assessment,” “Manual-less and Training-Free System,” “Automated Urine Analyzer,” and “Value Stream Mapping of the Bombardier Q400 Production Line,” all of which were sourced from the program industrial partners Siemens, Schlumberger and Sharp.
